“Rumination” (Fen Chu), also Wiederkäuen, heißt der erste Film des chinesischen Malers und Künstlers Xu Ruotao. Ein Name, den man sich sicherlich merken muss. Zur bisherigen Biographie von Xu schreibt der Connoiseur Contemporary:
XU ruotao was born in 1968 in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China. He is currently living and working in Beijing. XU’s large canvases reflect a world where we can view nature’s processes from different viewpoints and perspectives. In this world the interrelationships between his lines and forms reflect a natural coexistence which isfurther emphasized by his selection of minimalist, contrasting colour.
Auf dem internationalen Filmfestival in Vancouver gewann Xu Ruotao zwar nicht den Hauptpreis in der Tigers&Dragons-Sektion (Eine Sektion, die vollständig dem jungen und innovativen asiatischen Kino gewidmet ist), er wurde aber mit einer lobenden Erwähnung geehrt. Das macht aber nichts, weil das Presseecho zum Film dermaßen aufregend klingt, dass ich es kaum erwarten kann “Rumination” zu sehen (nur wo, das ist die Frage).
Das offizielle Programm des IFF Vancouver fasst den Inhalt folgendermaßen zusammen:
The film proper presents itself as a chronicle, chaptered in years from 1966 to 1976, but the action actually proceeds in reverse-chronological order. It opens in the dog years leading up to Mao’s death and the first chapter features the Tangshan earthquake (from 1976), climaxes in the bloody years when the Red Guards ran wild and closes with an idealistic communist hailing the coming upheaval. The longest chapter is 1973, when a gang of roving but already defeated Red Guards occupies an abandoned factory in which a vagrant is sleeping. Xu himself was born in 1968, at the height of Red Guard madness. His film is truly a rumination, a wry attempt to think through the meaning of one of history’s great cycles of idealism and disillusionment.
Das Aufregende liegt also ganz klar im Narrativen. David Bordwell arbeitete sich in seinem BLOG hoch interessant und natürlich auch lesenswert an Xu’s Film ab, was die Vorfreude natürlich nochmal aufs Neue befeuert. Kurzes Beispiel:
The scenes are fairly episodic and independent, so I didn’t detect the backwards structure for quite a while. But my uncertainty had another source. Xu introduces each year’s scenes with a date that is, except for one instance, not the year of the actions shown. In fact, while the segments move in reverse order, the years’ designations move in chronological order.
Auch visuell sieht “Rumination”, wie es der Trailer vermuten lässt, sehr aufregend aus. Also, wir warten einfach und beten zum Kinogott (ist der Franzose ?!?) , dass man irgendwie doch noch die Möglichkeit erhält diesen Film irgendwo, irgendwie – in adäquaten Verheältnissen – zu sehen:
